Disable IE ESC Windows Server 2019

In this quick tutorial I will explain how to get rid of annoying IE Enhanced Security Configuration page which appears every time you launch your Internet Explorer browser in Windows Server 2019 and prevents you from accessing websites.

What is IE Enhanced Security Config?

Let us see. Say, I have just installed a brand new copy on Server 2019 and want to download drivers or install software. But as I launch the browser I immediately face the page res://iesetup.dll/HardAdmin.htm telling me Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration is enabled

HardAdmin.htm startpage in Windows Server 2019

This means that you cannot open any web page of any website (even SSL protected using the URL beginning with https://) until you add every single web page to the exclusion list (a.k.a. Trusted sites zone). Clicking on the Add button every time you navigate to the next page is VERY annoying and here is how it looks like:

add an exclusion in IE Windows Server 2019
Content from the website listed below is being blocked by the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration.

If you trust this website, you can lower security settings for the site by adding it to the Trusted sites zone.

As you can understand, this kind of “security” is an overkill and serves primarily to make you life harder instead of improving security of your Server running Windows Server 2019 OS.

How Get Rid of IE Enhanced Security Configuration in Windows Server 2019

Step 1. Launch the Server Manager:

Server Manager Windows Server 2019

Step 2. In the left pane select (click on) Local Server.
Step 3. Find IE Enhanced Security Configuration and click on the link On:

Server Manager - Local Server - IE ESC

Step 3. Select Off for Administrators and Users depending on what user group you wish to free from sufferings:

Turn Off Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration for Admins and Users

What’s Next?

After you’ve done this, you will be able to freely visit any websites without that hell. Every time you run the Internet Explorer you will see Soft Admin page (URL: res://iesetup.dll/SoftAdmin.htm in the address bar):

Wrapping Words

I hope, this guide and explanation helped you get rid of that annoying restriction in Windows Server 2019. Feel free to post your feedback in the comments area. Good luck!

P.S. In the conclusion I’d like to advise you to use Chrome Enterprise or Firefox instead of Internet Explorer on your Windows Servers.
